Eine Germaniumdiode erlaubt, wie normale Dioden auch, den Stromfluss nur in Durchlassrichtung. Ihre Besonderheit liegt in dem verwendeten Halbleitermaterial Germanium. Dieses erlaubt eine wesentlich geringere, zu überbrückende Diffusionsspannung das sonst verwendete Silizium. Die Diffusionsspannung dieses Dioden-Bricks liegt bei nur nur 0,2V. Daher eignet er sich sehr gut zum Gleichrichten hoher Frequenzen von bis zu 1GHz.
